The shape and cut of the grooves contain an immense amount of information and the objective of any quality analog music system is to interpret this information as accurately as possible. For that to happen the stylus needs to operate in an environment that is free of any vibrational energy & resonance that is not a result of its interaction with the grooves. However, in practice there is a lot of energy moving through a turntable system that the stylus picks up in addition to the vibrations associated with the grooves that it is designed to do. This unwanted energy can be heard as distortion, smear, added harmonics, channel imbalances and these types of sonic phenomena often obscure the micro details within the recording as well as add a coloration to the music.

The first step in designing a high quality turntable is to carefully measure where is this unwanted energy is coming from and how does it move through the system. At Döhmann Audio, we have spent a lot of time using sophisticated test equipment to measure the resonance profiles of common turntable designs because in order to improve the performance of a turntable, you must first have an accurate understanding of where the resonance is generated and how it behaves. Our research indicated that some resonance originated from the mechanical systems of the turntable (eg. motor, bearing, platter, etc), some from the environment (eg. building, floor, sound waves, etc) and some from the electrical systems (eg, power supplies, control circuitry, etc). Furthermore, the turntable also acts as a physical eco-system where resonance moves through the various parts and interacts with itself. We also made some ground-breaking discoveries about how the vinyl record itself interacts with these energies.

Once these insights are understood, the next objective was to find ways of minimizing the sources of resonance and eliminating how they are propagated throughout the turntable. When we started our journey, we discovered that many solutions used by turntable manufacturers for decades where not really very effective and in some cases introduced their own set of challenges. Even well regarded, positively reviewed turntable models didn’t perform well when we measured them. If we wanted to make major improvements to the sonic performance of turntables, we had to look outside the traditional methods and technologies used by turntable manufacturers.

This approach is at the heart of what differentiates Döhmann Audio from other turntable manufacturers. Mark Döhmann looked at other industries that had similar challenges and investigated how they solved them. For example, electron microscopes in research labs cannot operate accurately if there is even the smallest of vibrations present. How do they isolate a microscope? How do fighter jet manufacturers deal with vibrational energies when breaking the sound barrier? How do NASA engineers isolate & insulate sensitive equipment in satellites from damaging resonant energy? How does electronic equipment used in volatile environments such as mining shafts dissipate energy without interacting with the surroundings? By investigating the research and solutions employed within other challenging environments and industries, Döhmann Audio has been able to develop new innovations and technologies that have never been applied to audio before, and the results are exceptional.

Another important philosophy of the company is ‘evolution’. In a similar approach to Porsche with their iconic 911 sports car, the best results are achieved from creating a great design in the first instance that is based on solid scientific principles and research, then continuing to test, measure, change and make incremental improvements as they become available. This way of developing and perfecting a design can be heard immediately when experiencing a Döhmann turntable and the turntables have been designed in a way where all previous versions can be upgraded to the current specification.

The Helix One Mk3 was designed with the objective in mind to create the ultimate turntable system. To achieve this ambition, Döhmann Audio has incorporated some unique design features and technologies, including a fully integrated MinusK vibration isolation system utilizing NSM technology, a mechanical crossover network which is designed to dissipate mid and high frequency vibrations, floating arm boards, a custom designed Swiss-manufactured motor designed to Döhmann Audio’s specifications and carefully designed resonance dissipation pathways within the chassis. The Powerbase contains the power supply, control software to drive the new motor and special high frequency / RF absorption features. It also contains a suspension stabilizer to lock the table from moving during record changeover, a lighting control system and power filtration functions.

In October 2022, Dohmann Audio introduced the new Mk3 version of the Helix One which has the following improvements over the previous Mk2 version:

New Advanced Composite Bearing

New DC Power Supply

New Drive System

Improved Platter Design

New RSA resonance control technology

New Advanced Composite Arm board (ACA)

New Record Clamp with RSA Resonance Control

The Helix One Mk3’s sound is immediately recognized for its purity and realism. For many owners, the vacuum system may be deemed to be unnecessary. However, for those customers who demand a vacuum system for the benefits that it gives and desire to have that ‘ultimate’ specification of a Dohmann turntable, the Helix One Mk3 Vacuum sets a new benchmark in audio playback. The vacuum system creates suction and turns itself off just as the stylus touches the grooves. There’s no pump action during replay at all and even if the system experienced a loss of suction which required the pump to activate, it is designed in a way that its operation is silent and decoupled from any aspect of the system that may affect the sonic performance. Furthermore, the virtual o-ring technology results in absolutely no influence of platter inertia whatsoever – the vacuum system contributes no influence on the carefully engineered platter & bearing systems. This level of performance is simply unprecedented.

Please read the information on the Helix One Mk3 to better appreciate the foundations for this statement turntable by internationally acclaimed analogue designer Mark Dohmann and his team.

What does a vacuum hold-down system do?

A vacuum turntable uses a gentle suction beneath the record to draw the vinyl firmly and uniformly onto the platter surface. For this to work, the platter must have a special design: an air channel or pathway and a sealing mat or lip around the edge that allows the vacuum to create a seal under the record. Once the vacuum is engaged, the vinyl becomes effectively part of the platter — fully “coupled” and flat, eliminating air gaps and ensuring full-surface contact. This pressure is evenly spread across the whole disc, not just at the label/spindle area (as with a clamp) or edge (as with some stabiliser rings). Aside from presenting a flat vinyl record, the vinyl and the platter present as one ‘effective mass’, which has sonic benefits.

What are the sonic benefits of a well-designed vacuum hold-down system?

Eliminates warps and air gaps

A vacuum hold-down system forcibly flattens the record against the platter, whether the vinyl is slightly warped, has uneven pressing or simply isn’t perfectly flat. This ensures the stylus rides the grooves with consistent geometry. This can help avoid groove mis-tracking, distortion, or pitch instability that might otherwise result from warps or uneven contact. Because the entire surface is in intimate contact, you avoid “air pockets” under the record that might introduce resonance or micro-flutter.

Better stylus tracking and groove contact

With the record held perfectly flat and flush, the stylus can maintain consistent contact with the groove walls and floor, which improves tracking accuracy. This helps especially with delicate groove passages, subtle dynamics, and complex recording mixes, where even slight variations in contact can smear or blur detail. Also, because vacuum hold-down distributes force over the entire disc, it avoids some of the potential downsides of clamps (which only press at center) or weights (which increase inertia but may not flatten warped records completely).

Reduces resonance, vibration & feedback loops
Analog playback is highly sensitive: as the stylus tracks the groove, it generates tiny vibrations. Those vibrations can travel from the vinyl to the platter, bearing, and even into the tonearm or plinth — potentially feeding back into the stylus and muddying detail. By rigidly coupling the vinyl to the platter, the vacuum system reduces the chances for micro-movements and resonance, minimising energy interplay between the stylus and platter. This means fewer distortions, less “smearing,” and a more stable, accurate reproduction of the groove’s fine details.

More consistent speed & stability (less wow/flutter noise)
Once the record is tightly coupled to the platter, there’s less likelihood of slippage or micro-variations in rotation, both of which can cause wow and flutter (subtle pitch fluctuations) or timing instability. A vacuum system results in a minimal increase in rotational inertia compared to heavy weights, meaning less strain on the motor and platter bearing, yet you gain improved rotational stability.

Increase in sonic clarity, detail and accuracy
The overall improvement of superior stylus contact, reduced micro-vibrations and the elimination of warps/air gaps is less resonance and fewer mechanical anomalies. This allows the stylus to convert the groove geometry into an electrical signal more accurately. Discerning listeners report fewer distortions or colorations, which often improves midrange purity and clarity of vocals and instruments. Tighter bass, greater low frequency clarity, improved transient impact (drums, percussion), more image stability and better overall fidelity.

Why have we delayed offering our customers this feature?

Mark Dohmann has been building turntables since 1982 and has a lot of experience designing and building vacuum hold-down systems. When Dohmann Audio started the Helix project in 2013, Mark designed the Helix One and Two from the beginning with the vision to incorporate a vacuum system in the future. The architecture of the Helix platform has always had accommodations for a vacuum system and we have been quietly working away on a vacuum hold-down system with the intention of introducing it when we felt that it would represent value to our customers.

As our research & development progressed in the ensuing years, we were able to bring the operating noise floor of our turntables to unprecedented low levels. Due to advances in materials science, engineering & manufacturing technologies and test equipment capability, the Mk3 generation of turntables in particular are operating with noise floors that would have been considered impossible a few years ago.

This rapid technological development posed a problem for incorporating a vacuum hold-down system. Traditional vacuum systems are relatively unsophisticated, contributing noise and various sonic artefacts to the playback performance. They can also be unreliable, require onerous maintenance and in high resolving hi-fi systems, can be heard operating during music playback. The lower we dropped our operating noise floor, the harder it became to incorporate a vacuum system that did not interfere with the playback performance and did not suffer from the traditional vacuum system issues.

We realised that to satisfy those customers who desired a vacuum hold-down system in our turntables, we had to go back to the drawing board and design something completely different to what has been used in the past. Mark consulted with the industrial manufacturing industry and researched the most advanced vacuum systems used in this sector. He found a new way of applying these technologies to the ecosystem of a turntable. Despite not offering a vacuum system, it has been frequently compared favourably in reviews to other turntables at higher pricing levels which feature vacuum. For many owners, the vacuum system may be deemed to be unnecessary. However, for those customers who demand a vacuum system for the benefits that it gives and desire to have that ‘ultimate’ specification of a Dohmann turntable, the Helix Two Mk3 Vacuum is a revelation. Furthermore, the ‘virtual o-ring’ technology results in absolutely no influence of platter inertia whatsoever. This level of performance is simply unprecedented.

Please read the information on the Helix Two Mk3 to better appreciate the foundations for this statement turntable by internationally acclaimed analogue designer Mark Dohmann and his team.

The result is an advanced Rotary Feedthrough Technology using ‘shaped oil’ virtual o’ring seal technology to protect the rotating shaft and platter from air leaks. It has taken us a few years to create a version of this technology that can be used in audio reproduction but the wait has been worth it.

The Dohmann vacuum hold-down technology is revolutionary in that it has never appeared in turntable applications before and it is so far advanced from existing vacuum designs that we can finally introduce it as an option to our customers. It is the result of many years of research, development, collaboration and listening by internationally acclaimed analog designer Mark Döhmann and his team.

When a stylus moves through the grooves of a record, it converts vibrational energy into an electric signal. This unwanted energy can be heard as distortion, smear, added harmonics, channel imbalances and these types of sonic phenomena often obscure the micro details within the recording as well as add a colouration to the music.

The first step in designing a high-quality turntable is to carefully measure where is this unwanted energy is coming from and how does it move through the system. At Döhmann Audio, we have spent a lot of time using sophisticated test equipment to measure the resonance profiles of common turntable designs because in order to improve the performance of a turntable, you must first have an accurate understanding of where the resonance is generated and how it behaves. Our research indicated that some resonance originated from the mechanical systems of the turntable (eg. motor, bearing, platter, etc), some from the environment (eg. building, floor, sound waves, etc) and some from the electrical systems (eg. power supplies, control circuitry, etc). Furthermore, the turntable also acts as a physical eco-system where resonance moves through the various parts and interacts with itself. We also made some ground-breaking discoveries about how the vinyl record itself interacts with these energies.

Once these insights are understood, the next objective was to find ways of minimising the sources of resonance and eliminating how they are propagated throughout the turntable.

The Helix Two Mk3 was designed with the objective in mind to create a reference turntable system which incorporates all of the Dohmann technologies in a compact footprint. To achieve this ambition, Döhmann Audio has incorporated some unique design features and technologies, including a fully integrated MinusK vibration isolation system utilising NSM technology, a mechanical crossover network which is designed to dissipate mid and high frequency vibrations, a floating armboard, a custom designed Swiss-manufactured motor designed to Döhmann Audio’s specifications and carefully designed resonance dissipation pathways within the chassis. A separate box contains the external power supply and power filtration circuitry.

In October 2022, Döhmann Audio introduced the new Mk3 version of the Helix One which has the following improvements over the previous Mk2 version:

New Advanced Composite Bearing

New DC Power Supply

New Drive System

Improved Platter Design

New RSA resonance control technology

New Advanced Composite Armboard (ACA)

New Record Clamp with RSA Resonance Control

The Helix Two Mk3’s sound is immediately recognised for its purity and realism. It is designed to operate flawlessly in non-ideal environments such as older houses with wooden floors, upper floors, attics where external vibrations are carried through buildings – even those made from concrete, steel, and brick. Due to its revolutionary vibration isolation system, it is also not dependent on a high-quality audiophile stand. The design has made it possible to incorporate a level of engineering previously not possible at this price point and as a result, the Helix Two Mk3 is considered to be outstanding value. The more compact dimensions allow it to be used in smaller spaces and standard sized stands.

The list of innovations and unique technologies is extensive however it is greater than the sum of its features. It is a highly engineered precision instrument that serves as a perfect platform for the music to emerge and engage the listener emotionally. Musical information is released from the grooves of a vinyl record with energy and soul. Often chosen by discerning audiophiles around the world as their reference analogue system, as well as being the turntable of choice for many high-end brands exhibiting in major international hi-fi shows, the Helix Two Mk3 simply allows the music to flow and the full potential of the system to be achieved.

Features

State-of-the-art custom designed Swiss-manufactured motor

Push button Speed Adjust

Separate external advanced DC power supply

Micro Signal Architecture© (MSA)

Negative Stiffness Mechanism Vibration Isolation (NSM)

Mechanical Crossover Technology (MCT)

Tri-Modal Platter system (TMP)

Edge Damping Ring (EDR)

Tone arm Damping System (TDS)

Resonance Tuned Suspension (RTS)

Diamond like Coating Amorphous Material Bearing Friction Modifier (DLC)

High Torque Adjustable Drive (HTAD)

RSA resonance control technology

Advanced Composite Armboard (ACA) using custom ballistics grade energy absorbing technology

Record Clamp with RSA resonance control technology

Facility for one tonearm

Awards

Reviews

Hi-Fi Choice, 2023

A game-changer, this is one of the quietest performers we’ve ever tested… We decide to finish up our testing session of Döhmann’s remarkable turntable with a pair of tracks from opposite ends of the sonic spectrum. This unwanted energy can be heard as distortion, smear, added harmonics, channel imbalances and these types of sonic phenomena often obscure the micro details within the recording as well as add a colouration to the music.

The first step in designing a high quality turntable is to carefully measure where is this unwanted energy is coming from and how does it move through the system. At Dohmann Audio, we have spent a lot of time using sophisticated test equipment to measure the resonance profiles of common turntable designs because in order to improve the performance of a turntable, you must first have an accurate understanding of where the resonance is generated and how it behaves.

Once these insights are understood, the next objective was to find ways of minimising the sources of resonance and eliminating how they are propagated throughout the turntable.

This approach is at the heart of what differentiates Dohmann Audio from other turntable manufacturers. Mark Dohmann looked at other industries that had similar challenges and investigated how they solved them. By investigating the research and solutions employed within other challenging environments and industries, Dohmann Audio has been able to develop new innovations and technologies that have never been applied to audio before, and the results are exceptional.

Another important philosophy of the company is ‘evolution’. In a similar approach to Porsche with their iconic 911 sports car, the best results are achieved from creating a great design in the first instance that is based on solid scientific principles and research, then continuing to test, measure, change and make incremental improvements as they become available. This way of developing and perfecting a design can be heard immediately when experiencing a Dohmann turntable and the turntables have been designed in a way where all previous versions can be upgraded to the current specification.

The Helix Two Mk3 was designed with the objective in mind to create a reference turntable system which incorporates all of the Dohmann technologies in a compact footprint. To achieve this ambition, Dohmann Audio has incorporated some unique design features and technologies, including a fully integrated MinusK vibration isolation system utilising NSM technology, a mechanical crossover network which is designed to dissipate mid and high frequency vibrations, a floating armboard, a custom designed Swiss-manufactured motor designed to Dohmann Audio’s specifications and carefully designed resonance dissipation pathways within the chassis. A separate chassis contains the external power supply and power filtration circuitry.

The Result

Upgradability

The Helix Two platform is fully upgradable. Mk1 and Mk2 generation turntables are upgradable to Mk3 and the Mk3 is upgradable to vacuum specification. This protects our customer’s investment and avoids significant depreciation often experienced when a new model is released. The Helix platform was designed from the beginning to be upgradable as new technologies are discovered, tested and integrated.

Features

Facility for one tonearm

State-of-the-art custom designed Swiss-manufactured motor

Push button Speed Adjust

Separate external advanced DC power supply

Micro Signal Architecture© (MSA)

Negative Stiffness Mechanism Vibration Isolation (NSM)

Mechanical Crossover Technology (MCT)

Tri-Modal Platter system (TMP)

Edge Damping Ring (EDR)

Tone arm Damping System (TDS)

Resonance Tuned Suspension (RTS)

Diamond Like Coating Amorphous Material Bearing Friction Modifier (DLC)

High Torque Adjustable Drive (HTAD)

RSA resonance control technology

Advanced Composite Armboard (ACA) using custom ballistics grade energy absorbing technology

Record Clamp with RSA resonance control technology

Finishes

All Helix Two Mk3 turntables come with a metal top plate and are available in the following finishes. In the lower level are the 3 adjustable feet that connect the entire turntable to the stand. The drive motor is also installed there, as well as the motor control and the XLR terminal. The center level, connected to the lower and upper levels by a special adhesive layer, carries only the armboard and the tonearm. The platter bearing and the control panel are mounted on the top level. By choosing different wood materials, each level is optimised in terms of vibration. Disturbances are greatly reduced in stages from the drive level to the tonearm level. The result of this mix of materials and the construction is the impressive quietness of the turntable.

TT01 with on/off and speedselector

TT01 with on/off and speedselector, adjustable feet from top and rearside with balanced XLR connectors, power connector and speed finetune

ABOUT THE TT01

The turntable is driven by a flat belt. The platter bearing is a 10mm plain bearing with a 7mm ceramic ball. The bearing bottom is designed with a center hole so that the ceramic ball runs on a defined circular ring. This creats an even, controlled braking torque that keeps the drive motor constantly running against a small load. This braking torque calms the mechanical running of the motor. This effect is also further supported by the use of grease for the bearing axle instead of oil. The platter is made of three parts: sub-platter, acrylic disc and outer ring. This combination of materials contributes to the damping and smoothing of the platter. Phono preamplifiers can be connected via balanced XLR outputs. The tonearm is fixed to the arm board by a central steel ball and four screws arranged in a parallelogram. The contact via these 5 point connections has an isolating effect for resonances between chassis and tonearm. The circular arm board mounted on the middle level of the chassis also has only 4 point-shaped contact points to the chassis. The basic principle of this drive is the gradual isolation of the individual components while realising the greatest possible mechanical strength.

PARTS LIST

Flightcase

Chassis

Tonearm

Platter

Platter mat

Belt

Power supply

Mains cable

Connection cable

Accessories

User manual Thiele TT01

User manual Thiele TA01

SOLID CASE

Thiele TT01 is delivered in a custom flightcase

Reviews

Matthias Böde,Stereo 03/22

"Creative and sophisticated. The sound is what REG regards as ideal—very silent in background with unconstrained perceived dynamics, very solid, detailed but without any hint of exaggeration by resonances in the upper frequencies or motor-induced platter vibrations. Is it somehow unique? Well, yes! Whether you are fan of friction-driven turntables (the famous Garrard is made that way), or if you think that the right way to build turntables is to use a pair of motors and a belt, Reed Muse 3C should catch your eye.

Thanks to its unique and innovative design, you can convert friction-driven turntable to a belt-driven machine in 5 minutes.

What is inside of our turntable?

After extensive prototyping and long-term experiments we came up to a solution of using a reverse sliding thrust ball bearing for a main axis. Bearing ball is made either from steel or ceramics and the lateral stability is achieved by using very durable and low-noise polymer sliding bearing. Symmetrical drive system is designed to avoid radial bearing load, hence minimizing possible mechanical noise and ensuring longevity of a master bearing.

Muse 3C is powered by two direct current motors and by design is friction-driven, however its major innovation is possibility to convert it to a belt-driven system in minutes by replacing traction rollers and putting on a belt (and, of course, setting a switch to a correct position). To prevent possible mechanical vibration, we use traction rollers (be it friction or belt) of different diameters, spinning at different velocities and having mathematically non-multiple diameters to driving disc diameter. Disc velocity is stabilized by quartz-based phase locked loop (PLL) system, so average speed deviation depends solely on the parameters of quartz crystal. Turntable drive is equipped with both mechanical and electronic protection systems.

Turntable also features electronic inclinometer (electronic level dedicated to measure turntable slope/tilt angle), which allows user to achieve perfect horizontal alignment without using additional tools.

Turntable can be equipped with one or two tonearms with effective length ranging from 9.5” to 12”.

Reviews

Hi-Fi+, Alan Sircom, 2016

That’s possibly the first thing anyone is going to get from the Muse 3C’s performance; stability. Not simply pitch stability (although it’s remarkably precise) but that absence of even a hint ‘watery’ piano notes that the Reed deck plays so well, gives the piano in particular a sense of solidity and physicality that is so well appreciated and so hard to find through vinyl replay at times…. The Reed goes for a cleaner, more precise sound without undermining the harmonic structure of the music in the process….
